The world's best ski resort nine times

The Altapura hotel in Val Thoren's offers a striking experience with its panoramic windows showcasing breathtaking views of the resort and mountains. The accommodations feature a mezzanine double bed and a standalone bathtub, creating an ambiance that feels almost cinematic. The spacious living room area is ample enough to accommodate a film crew, making it a standout feature of the bedroom.

The hotel excels in nearly every aspect, situated in a prime ski-in, ski-out location at an elevation of 2,300 meters (7,545 feet). Recognized as Europe's highest resort and awarded the title of the world's best ski resort nine times, including for the 2024/2025 season, it resembles a mini wonderland, enhanced by actual tree trunks that rise from the ground to the ceiling near the ground-floor lifts.

Guests can unwind in the beautifully designed lounge, adorned with comfortable 70s-style chairs and sofas, complemented by an inviting circular bar—perfect for post-ski relaxation and sharing adventurous mountain stories. The spa is equally appealing, featuring a stunning indoor-outdoor pool and an ice-filled igloo room, which my daughter considers the highlight of the hotel, even surpassing the kids' club.

Dining options are exceptional, with the elegant Italian restaurant Casa Alta and the Alpine-themed La Lauterio, known for its raclettes and fondues, serving as the hotel's culinary hub. The cheese is of the highest quality, providing a comforting experience, and the wine selection is equally commendable. Breakfast is offered in a more casual setting, with numerous windows providing excellent mountain views. While Altapura presents a generous breakfast spread, the preparation of 'eggs and soldiers' falls short, as the eggs are notably undercooked. Additionally, ordering coffee can be a challenge, requiring guests to navigate the dining area in search of staff to place their orders.
