Deaths attributed to alcohol consumption:
Medical professionals have urged Wes Streeting to adopt a 'lifesaving' initiative following a 'catastrophic' 42 percent increase in alcohol-related fatalities over the past five years.
In 2023, there were 8,274 deaths attributed to alcohol consumption; however, the Alcohol Health Alliance (AHA) indicated that this statistic represents merely the 'tip of the iceberg.' The AHA, which comprises medical royal colleges, charitable organizations, treatment providers, and academic institutions, contends that this figure is only a small portion of the total fatalities where alcohol played a significant role.
The alliance has called for immediate action from Wes Streeting to address the 'alarming trend,' emphasizing a 42 percent increase in deaths 'solely' caused by alcohol since 2019.In a correspondence directed to the Health Secretary, the medical experts insisted that England should implement a minimum unit pricing (MUP) scheme akin to that of Scotland, which they characterized as 'lifesaving.'
They also criticized the government for its 'inaction across the board,' which has resulted in a surge in alcohol-related deaths in England.
In March 2020, the previous administration stated that there were 'no plans for the introduction of MUP in England,' although it would continue to observe the progress of the initiative in Scotland.
When questioned last October about the potential introduction of the scheme, Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson remarked that they were collaborating 'closely across government to better understand what can be done.'
