A significant discovery has been made in the United Kingdom, where the largest site of dinosaur footprints has been identified, featuring hundreds of enormous tracks dating back 166 million years. A short distance from the bustling traffic of the M40, researchers have discovered a remarkably different type of thoroughfare. Approximately 166 million years ago, what is now known as Britain's 'dinosaur highway' was bustling with massive creatures and formidable predators traversing the landscape. Academics from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham have revealed an extensive area of quarry floor adorned with hundreds of diverse dinosaur footprints. The team identified five of the most significant dinosaur track ways in the UK, with the longest extending 150 meters.
Four of these track ways are attributed to long-necked herbivores, likely Cetiosaurus, which measured around 18 meters in length and is a relative of the Diplodocus. The fifth track way was created by a Megalosaurus, a fearsome predator measuring nine meters, which roamed the marshy lagoons of Britain during the Middle Jurassic era. These exceptionally well-preserved tracks provide remarkable insights into the lives of these long-gone giants, even capturing the moment when two dinosaurs intersected. Researchers assert that it is "highly probable" that additional tracks remain to be discovered.
In the Dewars Farm Quarry located in Oxfordshire, palaeontologists have identified over 200 dinosaur footprints across five distinct sets of tracks. These tracks were discovered within the Jurassic limestone of the quarry. Initially concealed beneath a layer of clay, the footprints were first noticed by quarry worker Gary Johnson, who detected 'unusual bumps' while removing the clay to access the quarry floor. Recognizing the importance of this discovery, experts were alerted, leading to a comprehensive excavation of the site.
In June of the previous year, more than 100 scientists and volunteers meticulously unearthed over 200 fossilized footprints. In addition to creating casts of the prints for further analysis, the researchers captured over 20,000 photographs to construct a complete 3D model of the site. This finding is linked to earlier discoveries in the region from 1997, when a previous limestone quarry revealed more than 40 tracks belonging to sauropods and theropods, which include bipedal dinosaurs such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex. However, that site was buried prior to the advent of digital cameras and drones, preventing the creation of 3D models of those tracks. Consequently, this recent discovery offers particularly valuable insights into a dynamic prehistoric ecosystem.
